LNG & Worldwide LNG Supplier - Peninsula360

Our future is energy

We operate as a physical distributor as well as a reseller of global marine fuel (bunker). With an international network of offices and operations in the world’s busiest ports, we guarantee high quality products and first-class customer care at all times. Our highly skilled team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We provide professional, cost-effective ways of meeting marine fuel needs, swiftly and efficiently – anywhere in the world. We provide a full range of marine services, including dedicated barging facilities, ship agency, and a worldwide in-house ship repair and maintenance network.

The regulation of greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry has been made a priority by the United Nations (UN) through the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IMO has set targets to reduce the industry’s carbon emissions by at least 50 per cent by 2050. Meeting these targets will require ships producing substantially less carbon emissions to be on the water by 2030.

A proven approach to reach these targets is to use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for as the main fuel source propulsion.

LNG has lower particulate, sulphur and nitrous emissions and produces considerably less greenhouse gas intense than traditional heavy fuel oil and marine diesel oil.

LNG infrastructures in main bunkering hubs around the world will help the shipping industry make the move to a more sustainable fuel proposition. The adoption of LNG as a bunkering fuel is expanding across the globe, with new bunkering infrastructure being built in Europe, Asia and North America.

BENEFITS OF LNG

EMISSIONS

It emits virtually no sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM). Compared to existing heavy marine fuel oils, LNG can emit up to 85% fewer nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

DECARBONISATION

LNG provides a way to meet the IMO’s decarbonisation target of a 40% decrease by 2030 for international shipping. Longer term LNG offers a decarbonisation pathway for shipping to become carbon neutral using liquefied biomethane (LBM) produced from biomass and liquefied synthetic methane, (LSM) produced from renewable electricity.

BUNKERING

LNG bunkering infrastructure can be used to supply zero-carbon fuels in the form of liquefied biomethane (LBM) or liquefied synthetic methane (LSM), with little or no modification, so enabling the transition to a decarbonised shipping industry.

SAFETY

Over the past 50 years, more than 100,000 commercial LNG cargoes have been safely delivered and global LNG shipments have covered more than 130 million miles – about 5,000 times around the earth – without any major safety incidents in port or at sea.

Peninsula Backs Marine Conservation Project To Restore Gibraltar’s Underwater Ecosystem

Peninsula, a global leader in the supply of marine fuels, is fully funding a local marine conservation initiative aimed at restoring Gibraltar’s coastal seagrass meadows, which could see native species like the seahorse return to its natural habitat.

The announcement was made at an official launch event for the initiative, held in Gibraltar, and attended by His Excellency, Governor of Gibraltar, Ben Bathurst, Gibraltar’s Minister for Health, Care, and Business, Gemma Arias-Vasquez, Minister for the Environment, Sustainability, Climate Change, and Education, John Cortes and Peninsula’s CEO and Founder, John A. Bassadone.

Attendees at the launch event heard presentations from Founder of The Nautilus Project, Lewis Stagnetto, and Peninsula’s Nick Gordon, about the environmental restoration initiative.

Run by The Nautilus Project, The Seagrass Restoration Project aims to restore Gibraltar’s native seagrass meadows, which have been displaced over the last decade, resulting in entire species such as the seahorse, disappearing from the area.

By growing seagrass in dedicated nurseries under optimal conditions and eventually transplanting the seagrass beds into the ocean, The Seagrass Restoration Project plans to restore native habitats and encourage biodiversity.

The seagrass beds will also help reduce atmospheric carbon by acting as a natural carbon sink, with early estimates suggesting the project could sequester over two tonnes of carbon annually.

John A. Bassadone, Peninsula’s CEO and Founder, said: “The conservation of the marine ecosystem and responsibly managing the impacts our activities have on the environment are very important to the team at Peninsula.

“In The Nautilus Project, we have found a partner that aligns with our values and shares our appreciation for the maritime world. We can’t wait to watch this project take root and restore the local ecosystem.”

Lewis Stagnetto, Founder and Marine Biologist at The Nautilus Project, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the importance of seagrass restoration, which is crucial for supporting marine biodiversity.

“This is an international issue and our hope is that this initial project will serve as a model that can eventually be adapted and implemented in various regions around the world. Through this collaboration, our aim is to educate and foster resilient marine environments that support diverse wildlife.”

Peninsula has a major base in Gibraltar and is the largest marine fuel supplier by volume in the area, having commenced supplying bunkers in the port of Gibraltar in 1996.

Control Of Supply Chain - Peninsula Petroleum

We have the ability to control our entire supply chain and thus offer quality products and services that are unique in today’s market.

Peninsula’s integrated supply platform continues to grow as we keep expanding our sourcing and blending capabilities. Combined with our key storage positions in the Americas and Europe, this sourcing strength ensures continuity of quality supply and control to our customer base.

Peninsula’s logistics have been further strengthened by building on our global product tanker fleet which now counts over 40 vessels. The 2019 delivery of our newbuild tanker, the Hercules 8000, marked the first unit of a series of multi-purpose dedicated shortsea bunker tankers to support our retail and freight operations.

In Europe we have continued to grow our assets, in part, by acquiring the world’s largest supply tanker, the 22,000 DWT Spectrum. She is currently servicing our Western Mediterranean supply hub from a base in Gibraltar; adding even greater flexibility to our regional offering.

Additionally, the purchase of several Handysize and Panamax units bolster our capability for transporting bulk cargoes and demonstrate Peninsula’s commitment to having full autonomy over cargo and logistics. We view having control over the supply chain as key to ensuring end-to-end product quality.

Quality assurance

Peninsula is the industry benchmark for quality. From its products, to services, to governance and compliance, Peninsula ensures the most stringent standards are adhered to.

In a rapidly evolving market environment, we continue to develop capabilities and raise our standards to deliver on our customers’ expectations. We will continue to expand our control of the supply chain to ensure that Peninsula remains the model example of quality.

Storage

Peninsula has continued adding to its extensive network of storage positions by securing substantial tank space in Malta and the Canary Islands, bringing its total operational capacity to over one million cubic meters.

In addition, we have increased our storage capacity with the addition of 547,000 bbls at the Statia Terminal in St. Eustatius. This is a strategic location to service our operations in Panama and the US Gulf and a continuation of our evolution to control our global supply chain to ensure the highest quality products and solutions.

This has been augmented by using the 72kt capacity Panamax tanker Gladiator as floating storage in the port of Gibraltar, providing key logistical advantages in the bay and supporting our operations in the Mediterranean.

Peninsula Expands Supply Of Conventional And Alternative Marine Fuels

Global marine fuel supplier Peninsula is expanding its presence in Middle East markets for conventional bunker fuels, while ramping up the supply of alternative fuels in other regions, a senior executive said.

“We have just launched new physical supply operations in Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali to complement our existing operation in Fujairah, so we are focused on building significant volume in those ports,” Kenny MacLean, Peninsula’s chief operating officer, told Reuters on the sidelines of SIBCON 2024 this week.

The company has secured bunker licences for both ports, adding to Peninsula’s services at more than 500 ports globally, said MacLean.

The re-routing of ships around South Africa due to the Red Sea crisis has boosted sales volumes in Mauritius and Las Palmas, as well as in the Western Mediterranean ports of Gibraltar and Algeciras.

“The deviations are now viewed as the ‘new normal’ by shipping traffic, so the demand has now been normalised,” he said.

The company is also preparing to boost the supply of alternative fuels amid industry efforts to cut emissions.

“Our specialist LNG bunkering vessel, Levante LNG, is operating in the Western Mediterranean, so we are naturally seeing demand there,” said MacLean.

“We are also providing LNG solutions in Southeast Asia, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, plus various other ports where customers have LNG requirements,” he added

The company will focus its LNG bunker services on traditional shipping lanes and locations closer to LNG infrastructure and loading facilities.

Maclean also sees a significant increase in marine biofuel demand for 2025, particularly in the EU after emissions trading system and maritime environment regulations were tightened.
The company has chemical tankers which can supply any ratio of biofuel in line with customer requirements, he added.

Peninsula is working with third parties and investing in the development of methanol and ammonia bunkering, though material demand for these fuels is unlikely to emerge for now, said MacLean.
